If I let my well run dry or fall over because of the situation (that needs "water"), how can I provide water to this "thirsty" situation I have to deal with? So, our guilt is meaningless, because what we feel guilty about would have no practical use if we did it otherwise.
At the bottom of course, it is pain that makes us feel this way (and it is logical).
And a question "Am I doing what I can about the situation with the resources I have? With what I am right now?"
And in the end, that's the only criterion we can have for our self-criticism. "Have I risen to the occasion?"
Because we know - even though it hurts - that we can't control everything in life. At least we can take comfort in knowing that we were as we needed to be in what was in our control zone.
I understand.
