I suggest songs by Nikos Xylouris or his brother, Psarantonis(nickname). The first is not alive, but his songs and their meanings are. Psarantonis is a very authentic “figure”. 79 years old. He still sings, keeping his authenticity and his virtues. They were born in Crete, that’s why I suggest that now.
Psarantonis has a great song called “The tiger”. I’ll search to see if there is a video with English subtitles. It’s one of my favourite songs.
Nikos Xylouris also sang a beautiful poem by Yiannis Ritsos:
“And look, my brother, we learned to talk
very quietly and simply.
We understand each other now - there is no need for anything more.
And I say tomorrow we will become still simpler;
we’ll find those words that take on the same weight in all hearts, on all lips so that we can call figs figs, and a trough a trough, so that others will smile and say: ‘Poems like these… We can make you a hundred per hour’. This is what we want, too.
Because we do not sing to separate ourselves from people, my brother,
we sing to bring people together”.
Thank you, too, Patrick.
